Show Off!

The Royal Highland Show is a must see when visiting Edinburgh in June. By booking into a luxury Edinburgh hotel, you too can live the lush lifestyle and walk amongst the rich and famous at this annual event.

The show originally began back in 1822 and Edinburgh was never its staple home. Until 1959, the show moved around through the various cities in Scotland. In 1948, the title of it being a ‘Royal’ show was given by King George VI. By 1960, Islington became the new permanent home for the show. The show did use to run between Sunday and Wednesday but this was altered to Thursday to Sunday due to a shift on focus on Livestock competitions which would be held on every Thursday and Friday. Since then, the show has gone on every year, except in 2001 due to the major foot and mouth crisis. The show recently celebrated both its 50th anniversary in Islington and the 170th show in 2010.

Each year usually sees 2000 entries and 5000 animals, all competing for the major prize. The show however always goes beyond the show jumping with there also being major entertainment, living activities, children’s games, shopping, animals and food and drink for all ages. Even traditional skills and food making gets judged with prizes being given out for a variety of causes. The event has become so popular that by 2011, 183,000 people were counted in. Generally, it becomes a great way in which Scots can boost national pride and celebrate their love for drink, food and farming all in the space of a few days.

The show will be taking place on 21 - 24 June this year (2012). Be sure to book a room fast at an Edinburgh Hilton hotel because reservations tend to go fast during the weekend. Indulge yourself in some luxury whilst enjoying what it means to be truly Scottish. Whether you are young or have many kids yourself, this is an ideal weekend away for the whole family. Bets are on!
