Hidden Gems Around the World

Some of the world’s great sights and cities are famous across the planet. Who among us isn’t familiar with the image of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Big Ben in London, Niagara Falls or the Colosseum in Rome? Even if we have never visited these places, the images are so widely celebrated in film, on television and in magazines and newspapers that we already feel familiar with them. Other destinations are less well known, but none the less worthy of a visit than their better known counterparts.

Some entire countries lie well off the tourist radar, despite having a wealth of attractions to offer their visitors. Take South America, for example. While tourists rush to discover the nightlife of Buenos Aires in Argentina, the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, very few take the time to discover Colombia. This country boasts its own magnificent ancient ruins as Ciudad Perdida (Lost City), thick jungle and mountains for adventure sports enthusiasts, and beautiful beaches along its Caribbean coast (let’s face it, how many people are even aware that Colombia has a Caribbean coast?). Decades of political instability and a somewhat undeserved reputation for crime has left this country off the tourist trail, but it is a rich treasure trove for those that choose to visit it.

Similarly, Azerbaijan is a country that few tourists take the time to visit, but those who do so return raving about the wonderful sights and fascinating culture of this country. The capital, Baku, boasts wonderful architecture and a UNESCO preserved historic centre, and a Baku hotel makes a fantastic base for exploring the riches that this city and the wider country have to offer.

In Baku, Soviet architecture meets Islamic and European influences to create an architectural style that is truly unique. The city also has a nightlife scene that has become famous among savvy party-goers the world over, and hotels in Baku are frequently occupied by tired out clubbers as well as sightseers and business visitors.
